Ways of Knowing

An audio show about the humanities

Season 3: Science and Metaphor

Science is not some purely rationalist endeavor that exists in an isolated realm of objective observations and hard data that can deliver absolute truths. It is built on and intertwined with the modes of analysis, intellectual history, and ways of knowing in the humanities.

This podcast looks at one particular aspect of that connection: the way in which science is shaped by metaphor, which impacts every aspect of scientific inquiry—from the initial observations, posing of questions, and development of hypotheses, to the running of experiments, comprehension of data, and communication of conclusions. By considering how metaphor relates to science, we can help reveal the deep connection between science and the humanities.
